Prepositions + objects explained

But first what is an object?

Over me
over = preposition
me = object

Objects are the receiver.

He prefers her over me.

He
= subject
her = object
me = object

Ask "who" = subject
Ask "whom" or "what" = object

In Arabic the object is attached to the preposition.

In English the object is a separate word.

over me = foo’i = فَوْقيِ

Example 1: To translate "over me" you would say:  foo’ + i.

foo’ = over = preposition

i = me = object

Let's do a close up:

 فَوْقيِ

 فوقي

Example 2: I am beside you.

I = subject
beside = preposition
you = object

Let's do a close up:

أنا جانِبُكَ

أنا جَنْبَـك

  What is an object?

Don't forget: When searching for an object in a sentence ask the question “whom” or “what.”

Keep going! You're almost there.

  Review the subject pronouns…

Interestingly, subject pronouns have a lot in common with object suffixes…

Subject pronouns

I

we

(1st person)

you (masc.)

you (pl.)

(2nd person)

you (fem.)

he/it

they

(3rd person)

she/it

Object suffixes

me

us

(1st person)

you (masc.)

you (pl.)

(2nd person)

you (fem.)

him/it

them

(3rd person)

her/it

See some similarities? Clearly the object suffixes are derived from the independent pronouns. Makes life simpler.

Recall:
1st person = the speaker
2nd person = the person spoken to
3rd person = the person spoken about
